Experimental and Clinical Toxicology invites original research, reviews, and clinical studies advancing our understanding of toxic substances, their mechanisms of action, and evidence-based approaches to risk assessment and safety evaluation.
Experimental and Clinical Toxicology is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to publishing high-quality research across the spectrum of experimental and clinical toxicology. We welcome submissions addressing fundamental mechanisms of toxicity, novel testing approaches, environmental and occupational exposures, pharmaceutical safety assessment, and clinical toxicology management.
Our editorial board comprises internationally recognized experts committed to advancing toxicology science through rigorous peer review and accessible publication. We prioritize research that bridges laboratory findings with regulatory applications and clinical practice, ensuring published work contributes meaningfully to public health protection and evidence-based safety assessment.
The journal serves researchers, clinicians, regulatory scientists, and public health professionals working across academia, government agencies, and industry sectors. By maintaining open access publishing, we ensure toxicology research reaches all stakeholders who need timely access to emerging safety data and mechanistic insights.
Mechanistic Toxicology
Research elucidating molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying toxic effects, including receptor-mediated toxicity, metabolic activation pathways, oxidative stress responses, epigenetic alterations, and organ-specific toxicity mechanisms. Studies using advanced omics approaches to identify toxicity biomarkers and molecular signatures are particularly welcome.
Environmental Toxicology
Investigations of environmental contaminants and their health effects, including emerging pollutants, nanomaterials, microplastics, heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals. Research addressing exposure assessment, environmental fate and transport, and ecosystem health impacts advances understanding of environmental health risks.
Pharmaceutical Safety
Studies evaluating drug safety, adverse drug reactions, drug-drug interactions, and toxicity prediction methodologies. Research on novel in vitro and in silico approaches for preclinical safety assessment, pharmacovigilance findings, and drug-induced organ toxicity supports safer therapeutic development.
Clinical Toxicology
Clinical research on poisoning management, antidote development, therapeutic drug monitoring, and overdose treatment protocols. Case series and observational studies documenting clinical presentations, treatment outcomes, and management strategies for toxic exposures contribute valuable real-world evidence.
Original Research
Novel findings from experimental or clinical toxicology investigations. Studies should demonstrate methodological rigor, appropriate statistical analysis, and clear interpretation of results within the broader toxicology context. Both positive and negative results with sound methodology are considered.
Reviews
Comprehensive systematic reviews and meta-analyses synthesizing current knowledge on important toxicology topics. Narrative reviews from leading experts addressing emerging topics, regulatory developments, and translational applications also provide valuable perspectives for the research community.
Methods Papers
Novel methodological approaches for toxicity testing, biomarker detection, exposure assessment, or data analysis. Alternative testing methods supporting 3Rs principles and regulatory acceptance receive priority consideration.
Case Reports
Detailed documentation of unusual poisoning cases, novel toxic exposures, or unexpected adverse reactions with clinical significance and learning value for practitioners.
We particularly encourage submissions with clear translational relevance, connecting basic toxicology research with regulatory applications, clinical practice, or public health policy. Research informing risk assessment methodologies, safety evaluation standards, and exposure guidelines provides immediate value for protecting human health and the environment.
Studies utilizing alternative testing approaches that support regulatory acceptance and reduction of animal testing align with evolving international frameworks for toxicity assessment. Computational toxicology, high-throughput screening, and integrated testing strategies represent priority areas for advancing predictive toxicology capabilities.
Submissions undergo editorial screening within 1-2 days for scope alignment and completeness. Qualified manuscripts proceed to single-blind peer review with expert toxicologists, typically completed within 2-3 weeks. Authors receive detailed reviewer feedback supporting manuscript improvement regardless of decision outcome.
Following acceptance, manuscripts enter production with professional copyediting, typesetting, and DOI assignment. Published articles appear online within 1-2 weeks of acceptance, ensuring rapid dissemination of important toxicology findings to the research community.
Expert Review
Rigorous evaluation by active toxicology researchers ensures published work meets high scholarly standards while constructive feedback strengthens manuscript quality.
Open Access
Immediate global availability ensures your research reaches all stakeholders including regulators, clinicians, and the public without access barriers.
Rapid Publication
Efficient workflows deliver first decisions within 3 weeks and online publication within days of acceptance.
Author Support
Responsive editorial team provides guidance throughout submission, review, and production processes.
Authors uncertain whether their research aligns with journal scope are welcome to submit pre-submission inquiries outlining their study question, methodology, and key findings. Our editorial office typically responds within 3-5 business days with guidance on submission appropriateness.
For questions about manuscript preparation, formatting requirements, or the submission process, contact [email protected]. Language editing services are available for authors who would benefit from professional English language support.
All submitted manuscripts must demonstrate methodological rigor appropriate to the study type. Experimental studies should include adequate sample sizes, appropriate controls, and statistical analyses. Clinical studies should follow relevant reporting guidelines including STROBE for observational studies, CONSORT for trials, and PRISMA for systematic reviews.
Authors should provide sufficient methodological detail to enable replication of experimental procedures. Data availability statements are required, and authors are encouraged to deposit datasets in public repositories to support research transparency and reproducibility in the toxicology field. Raw data supporting published findings should be available upon reasonable request.
Ethical conduct is fundamental to toxicology research. All animal studies must document institutional ethics approval and adherence to ARRIVE guidelines. Human studies require appropriate informed consent and ethics review documentation. Studies involving protected species, sensitive populations, or biosecurity concerns require additional documentation of regulatory compliance.
