Instructions for Authors

Comprehensive guidelines for submitting to Experimental and Clinical Toxicology.

Manuscript Preparation Guidelines

Follow these detailed instructions to ensure your toxicology research receives prompt and thorough evaluation. Manuscripts adhering to formatting requirements experience faster processing and smoother production.

Scope and Manuscript Types

Experimental and Clinical Toxicology welcomes original research, reviews, methods papers, case reports, and short communications across experimental and clinical toxicology. Before preparing your manuscript, confirm your research aligns with journal scope by reviewing priority topics on the Call for Papers page or submitting a pre-submission inquiry.

Original Research Articles

Novel findings from experimental or clinical toxicology investigations. Maximum 6000 words excluding abstract, references, tables, and figure legends. Studies should present complete findings with appropriate methodology, statistical analysis, and interpretation within broader toxicology context.

Review Articles

Comprehensive systematic reviews or authoritative narrative reviews on important toxicology topics. Maximum 8000 words. Systematic reviews should follow PRISMA guidelines. Include search strategy, inclusion criteria, and quality assessment methodology.

Methods Papers

Novel methodological approaches for toxicity testing, biomarker detection, or analytical procedures. Maximum 5000 words. Include validation data, performance characteristics, and comparison with existing methods where applicable.

Case Reports

Detailed documentation of unusual or instructive clinical toxicology cases. Maximum 3000 words. Include comprehensive clinical presentation, treatment approach, outcome, and educational implications.

Short Communications

Brief reports of preliminary findings warranting rapid communication. Maximum 2500 words and 2 figures or tables. Focus on novel observations with significant implications requiring prompt dissemination.

Manuscript Structure

Original research articles should follow standard scientific manuscript structure: Title page, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, References, Tables, Figure Legends. Maintain clear section demarcation and logical flow throughout the manuscript.

Title Page: Include concise, informative title (maximum 150 characters). List all authors with full names, institutional affiliations, ORCID identifiers, and corresponding author contact details. Provide running title (50 characters maximum), word count, and number of tables and figures.

Abstract: Structured abstract of 250 words maximum with Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions sections for original research. Unstructured abstracts acceptable for reviews and case reports. Include 3-6 keywords below abstract for indexing purposes.

Introduction: Provide relevant background establishing context and rationale for the study. Clearly state research objectives or hypotheses addressed. Avoid extensive literature review; focus on information directly relevant to understanding the current investigation.

Materials and Methods: Provide sufficient detail for replication of experimental procedures. Include animal species, strain, age, source; cell lines with authentication documentation; chemical sources and purity; equipment manufacturers and models; analytical methods and validation data; statistical methods and software used. State ethical approvals obtained.

Results: Present findings clearly and concisely with appropriate statistical reporting. Organize logically with subheadings where appropriate. Avoid duplicating data in text, tables, and figures. Report negative results when scientifically relevant.

Discussion: Interpret findings in context of existing literature and study hypotheses. Acknowledge limitations. Avoid repeating results. Discuss mechanistic implications, translational applications, and future research directions.

Formatting Requirements

Text Format

Double-spaced throughout with 2.5cm margins. Use 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font. Number all pages consecutively. Submit in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or LaTeX format. Do not embed figures in manuscript file.

References

Vancouver numbered citation style. Number references consecutively in order of first citation. Use reference management software (EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley) for accuracy. Include DOIs where available. Verify all citations against original sources.

Figures

Minimum 300 dpi resolution for all figures. Submit as separate TIFF, EPS, or high-quality JPEG files. Provide clear figure legends explaining all elements. Use consistent formatting across all figures. Composite figures should label panels as A, B, C.

Tables

Submit tables as editable Word format with clear headers and footnotes. Number tables consecutively. Each table should stand alone with sufficient context in title and footnotes. Avoid excessive complexity; consider supplementary tables for detailed data.

Ethical Requirements

All research involving animals must document institutional ethics committee approval with protocol number. Authors should confirm adherence to ARRIVE guidelines for complete and transparent reporting of animal research. Studies should describe animal welfare considerations including humane endpoints.

Research involving human participants requires documentation of institutional review board approval and informed consent procedures. Clinical studies should be registered in recognized clinical trial registries (ClinicalTrials.gov, ISRCTN) with registration number reported in manuscript.

Authors must disclose all potential conflicts of interest including financial relationships, consulting arrangements, and institutional affiliations that could influence research interpretation. Funding sources must be acknowledged with grant numbers.

Data and Reproducibility

All manuscripts must include Data Availability Statement specifying how underlying data can be accessed. Authors are strongly encouraged to deposit datasets in appropriate public repositories (Figshare, Dryad, domain-specific databases) with accession numbers included in manuscript.

For computational studies, authors should provide code and analysis scripts in public repositories (GitHub, Zenodo) to enable verification and extension of reported findings. Provide software version information and analysis parameters for reproducibility.

Supplementary Materials

Authors may submit supplementary materials that support main manuscript findings but are too extensive for inclusion in the published article. Supplementary files undergo peer review alongside the main manuscript. Acceptable supplementary materials include extended datasets, additional figures, detailed methodology descriptions, video content, and analysis code.

Label supplementary files clearly (Supplementary Figure S1, Supplementary Table S1, etc.) and reference them appropriately in the main text. Supplementary materials are published online alongside the main article and should include sufficient context to be interpretable without accessing the main manuscript.

Language Requirements

Manuscripts must be written in clear, grammatically correct English. Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to have manuscripts reviewed by native English speakers before submission or to use professional language editing services. Poor language quality may result in desk rejection or delayed processing.
